Live from Antarctica: Bitter Cold

November 14 - Day 3 - We all woke up later than usual today. It must have been the fatigue after a full day's work, but perhaps the weather, too, which wasn't very mild.

It was cold this morning, and a slight wind added an extra chill factor.

We were still busy clearing away the snow. We took care of the area that will soon hold the eight new bedrooms, which are to be added onto the technical areas this season.

We started to set up the big mess tent. Almost 20 metres long, it should be able to fit the entire team.

We also hauled back several containers Alain had parked on an ice plateau 3km below the ridge where the station sits.

The two mechanics, Kristof and Jesko, spent their time trying to fix one of the Prinoth tractors, which had a hydraulic problem. The Prinoth snow tractors are used to clear away the snow and to haul and transport sledges carrying containers from the coast.

Alain, who had a hoarse voice due to a lingering sore throat, evened out the runway again, as it had been greatly damaged over the winter.

It has been a productive day. Our skin has been bitten by the sun, the wind and the cold.

François prepared a feast for dinner: salmon, an assortment of small vegetables and a "gratin dauphinois" (sliced potatoes baked with milk and cheese baked to a golden brown on top).

Tonight it is -20°C outside and the wind has picked up.

Talk to you tomorrow.
