Unloading of Mary Arctica & arrival of Toyota Hiluxes
On January 23rd and 24th, the BELARE 10 team met the Mary Arctica cargo ship at Breid Bay on the coast of East Antarctica to unload supplies and equipment destined for the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica research station.
The unlodaing was complicated due to a bad swell kicked up by a storm off the coast of East Antarctica in the Southern Ocean. The swell complicated unloading efforts, but after two days of unloading, the job was done, and the first convoy started making its way back to the Princess Elisabeth station with the cargo.
Two customised Toyota Hiluxes were part of the cargo delivered. This was the first time the BELARE team was able to give them a test drive in Antarctica. These heavy-duty machines passed with flying colours!
